to appoint in his discretion one or more Policewomen to the police
force of Baltimore City, with full power to such Policewomen to act
as conservators of the peace and perform such other duties as the
Commissioner may prescribe and to be subject in all respects to such
rules and regulations as the Police Commissioner may from time to
time adopt, and the said Commissioner shall have the power to
remove any Policewoman appointed by him for the violation of any
rule or regulation of the said Commissioner. The salary of a Police-
woman so appointed under the authority of this section shall be the
same as that provided for patrolmen in Section 532 of this Article,
including the additional compensation for service, the said salary to
be paid by the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, and shall be
included in the annual estimate of expenses by said Police Com-
missioner certified to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore.

(b) The Police Commissioner shall MAY appoint one Policewoman
to be head of all Policewomen and to have the rank of [sergeant]
lieutenant, and an assistant head of all Policewomen, also with the
rank of lieutenant.
Such Policewomen shall receive the same salary
and compensation as other [sergeants] lieutenants and shall perform
such duties as the Police Commissioner shall prescribe.

547. Policewomen, except applicants for the positions of lieuten-
ant,
who are appointed or promoted under the provisions of this
sub-heading shall be subject generally to the same requirements and
procedures as apply to male candidates for appointment or promotion
in the Police Force. Applicants for the positions of lieutenant, cross-
ing guards and meter maids shall be subject to an examination as pro-
vided for by the Police Commissioner.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
January 1, 1966.

CHAPTER 640
(Senate Bill 150)

AN ACT to add new Section 11B to Article 27 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1957 Edition and 1964 Supplement), title "Crimes
and Punishments", to follow immediately after Section 11A thereof
and to be under the new sub-title "Assault on Police", to create the
offense of assault on police and to provide the penalty for violation.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 11B be and it is hereby added to Article 27 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition and 1964 Supplement),
title "Crimes and Punishments", to follow immediately after Section
11A thereof, to be under the new sub-title "Assault on Police", and
to read as follows:
