566                              LAWS OF MARYLAND                      [CH. 396

CHAPTER 396
(House Bill 481)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 436,
436A (a) and 436B of the Charter and Public Local Laws of
Baltimore City (1949 Edition, being Article 4 of the Code of
Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Baltimore City," subtitle
"People's Court," Section 436 having been last amended by Chapter
470 of the Acts of 1957 and Section 436A (a) and 436B having
been last amended by Chapter 846 of the Acts of 1963; amend-
ing the local laws concerning the People's Court of Baltimore
City in order to increase the salaries of the several judges thereof,
to increase the rate on which said judges' pensions are based
and the ceiling presently placed thereon, and to amend the pro-
visions regarding benefits paid to a widow of a Judge who dies
in active service.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 436, 436A (a) and 436B of the Charter and Public
Local Laws of Baltimore City (1949 Edition, being Article 4 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Baltimore City,"
subtitle "People's Court," Section 436 having been last amended
by Chapter 470 of the Acts of 1957 and Sections 436A (a) and
436B, having been last amended by Chapter 846 of the Acts of 1963,
be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments,
to read as follows:

436.

The Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City shall pay to the Chief
Judge of the People's Court of Baltimore City a salary of [$15,500.00]
$19,000.00 $19,500.00 per annum payable monthly, and to each of
the Associate Judges of the People's Court of Baltimore City, a salary
of [$15,000.00] $18,500.00 per annum, payable monthly. Each of said
Judges shall devote to his duties a regular session on every day ex-
cept Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays and such other sessions
at such times as the Chief Judge deems necessary or advisable,
during such eleven months in each year as the Chief Judge shall
assign. No Judge of the People's Court shall engage in the practice
of law while holding the position of Judge. The Chief Judge shall
make such assignments in such manner as to provide regular sessions
for the transaction of business, and such other sessions as he shall
prescribe, throughout the entire year. The Chief Judge of said Court
may direct that the Chief Constable's Office shall be closed on Satur-
days, so that the Clerk's Office may be closed on Saturdays. All such
sessions shall be held at such place as the Mayor and City Council of
Baltimore City shall provide.

436A.

(a) Every elected Judge of the People's Court of Baltimore City
shall be paid, after the termination of his active service, if he is
then at least sixty years of age or when he becomes sixty years of
age, a pension or salary calculated at the rate of [Five Hundred
Dollars ($500.00)] Six Hundred and fifty dollars ($650.00) SIX
HUNDRED DOLLARS ($600.00), per annum for each year or
