Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 200 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Howard County
(1957 Edition, being Article 14 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland), title "Howard County", sub-title "Sheriff", as last
amended by Chapter 585 of the Acts of 1961, be and it is hereby re-
pealed, and that new Section 200 be and it is hereby enacted in lieu
thereof to stand in the place of the section repealed, and to read as
follows:
200.
The Sheriff of Howard County shall appoint a warden to the jail
who shall be paid an annual salary by the county commissioners of
not less than five thousand dollars ($5,000.00), as the county com-
missioners may prescribe, payable in monthly installments. The
Sheriff shall also appoint guards in such number as may be necessary
to properly operate the jail, the number thereof to be subject to the
approval of the county commissioners. The salaries of the guards
shall be paid by the county commissioners in such amounts as they
may from time to time determine. The warden and the guards shall
hold office at the pleasure of the Sheriff and shall be removed at any
time the Sheriff may elect or by the Circuit Court for Howard County
upon indictment and conviction as now provided by law.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby de-
clared to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate
preservation of the public health and safety and having been passed
by a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of all the members
elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly, the same
shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(Senate Bill 489)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (m) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
increasing the salaries of the deputy sheriffs of Howard County,
and authorizing the sheriff to appoint an additional deputy sheriff
for Howard County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (m) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1964 Replacement Volume), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Com-
pensation and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
37.
(m) The Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual salary
of $5,000. He shall appoint two deputies who shall receive an annual
salary of [$4,500.] $4,800 each and [who] may in his discretion
