(r) Prince George's County: [$1,200.00] $1,800.00.

(e) Prince George's County. The County Commissioners of
Prince George's County may provide supplementary funds for the
payment of compensation or other expenses which had not been in-
cluded in the original appropriation; provided, however, that no
salaries of permanently employed personnel shall be changed during
any fiscal year. The Chief Clerk of the Board shall receive an annual
salary of [$5,200.00] not less than $5,200.00 but may, commensurate
with the ability of the person so employed, be paid an annual salary
not to exceed $12,000.00
$10,000.00.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1965.

CHAPTER 771
(House Bill 12)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 11 of
Article 59 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume), title "Lunatics and Insane," subtitle "Insanity as a De-
fense in Criminal Cases," to extend the periods during which a
person accused of crime may be held for examination of sanity by
either the Department of Mental Hygiene or the superintendent of
any mental hospital, and to state that such a person may question
his detention during these periods by use of the writ of habeas
corpus.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 11 of Article 59 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume), title "Lunatics and Insane," subtitle
"Insanity as a Defense in Criminal Cases," be and it is hereby re-
pealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

11.

(a) Whenever any person shall be arrested and brought before
a judge of any court of this State or before any justice of the peace
of this State, having criminal jurisdiction, charged with any offense,
and such person shall appear to be or be alleged to be insane or
lunatic and shall be committed in default of bail to await further
proceedings in such court or before such justice or elsewhere, the
said judge or justice shall commit him to the jail of the county or
city where the charge is pending, or to such institution for the care
of the insane as may from time to time be designated by the Depart-
ment of Mental Hygiene. The said Department of Mental Hygiene
shall be notified of such commitment, and shall thereupon examine
such person, and as soon as said Department shall determine whether
such person is insane or lunatic, and in every case within [two weeks]
