CHAPTER 24
(Senate Bill 76)

AN ACT to add new Section 90A to Article 77 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title
"Schools", to follow immediately after Section 90 thereof, provid-
ing for the use of protective eye devices to be used in certain
courses and defining such devices.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 90A be and it is hereby added to Article 77 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Public Educa-
tion", sub-title "Schools", to follow immediately after Section 90
thereof, and to read as follows:

90A.

Every pupil and teacher in any public school participating in any
of the following courses:

(a)   Vocational or industrial art shops or laboratories involving
use of or expose to:

(1)  Hot molten metals;

(2)  Milling, sawing, turning, shaping, cutting, or stamping of any
solid materials;

(3)  Heat treatment, tempering, or kiln firing of any metal or
other materials;

(4)  Gas or electric arc welding;

(5)  Repair or servicing of any vehicle;

(6)  Caustic or explosive materials;

(b)  Chemical or combined chemical-physical laboratories involving
caustic or explosive chemical or hot liquids or solids; is required to
wear industrial quality eye protective devices at all times while par-
ticipating in such courses or laboratories. Any public school may
furnish such devices for pupils and teachers, and shall furnish such
equipment for all visitors to such classrooms or laboratories. Any pub-
lic school may purchase such devices in large quantities and sell them
at cost to pupils and teachers.

The phrase "Industrial quality eye protective devices", as used in
this section, means devices meeting the standards of the American
standard safety code for head, eye, and respiratory protection, Z2.1-
1959, promulgated by the American standards association, incorpor-
ated.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1964.
