creasing the salary of the Sheriff of Caroline County and making
provision for the time at which this increase in salary is effective.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (e) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
37.
(e) The Sheriff of Caroline County shall receive an annual salary
of [two thousand four hundred dollars ($2,400)] three thousand
six hundred dollars ($3,600) and shall be allowed a sum not exceed-
ing one dollar ($1.00) a day for boarding and keeping each prisoner
confined in the county jail, and he shall keep a correct and full list
of all prisoners committed to his custody, showing the full length
of time each one is committed and by what authority. The Sheriff
of Caroline County shall also be entitled to the sum of eight cents
(8c) per mile for the use of his automobile in connection with his
official duties. He may appoint such deputies as may be necessary
for the enforcement of the duties of his office and at such compen-
sation as he shall fix, with the approval of the County Commis-
sioners as to number and compensation.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the increase in salary
provided for the Sheriff of Caroline County shall not be construed
or applied to affect the salary of the Sheriff in office at the time
this Act takes effect, for the remainder of the term in which he
then is serving. The increase in salary herein provided shall take
effect as of the beginning of the term of the Sheriff elected to that
office in the general election in November, 1966.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.

(House Bill 29)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (e)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," providing in
Caroline County for the appointment of deputy sheriffs and a
matron and cook for the county jail and also providing for the
compensation and travel allowance for such appointees.
