Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect

CHAPTER 311
(Senate Bill 40)

AN ACT to repeal Section 294 of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title
"Operation of Vehicles Upon Highways", and to enact a new-
Section 294 in lieu thereof, to stand in the place of the section so
repealed, to define a motor vehicle muffler, to require vehicles oper-
ated or driven on the highways of the State to be equipped with
a muffler and to regulate the use of mufflers on motor vehicles.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 294 of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Operation of
Vehicles Upon Highways", be and it is hereby repealed, and that
new Section 294 is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand in the
place of the section so repealed, and to read as follows:

294.

(a)  Every motor vehicle operated or driven upon the highways
of this State, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler
in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any exces-
sive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be
equipped with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device. No person shall
modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which
will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such
vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the
vehicle and such original muffler shall comply with all the require-
ments of this section.

(b)  A muffler as used herein is defined as a device consisting of
a series of chambers or baffle plates, or other mechanical design for
the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion
engine, and effective in reducing noise.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
on June 1, 1963.

CHAPTER 312
(Senate Bill 74)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (w)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1962 Supple-
ment), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", re-
lating to the annual cost of law enforcement in Worcester County.
