CHAPTER 877
(Senate Bill 502)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 2-33 of
the Code of Public Local Laws of Anne Arundel County (1957
Edition), being Article 2 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland, title "Anne Arundel County", sub-title "Sheriff", relat-
ing to the administration and expenses of the Anne Arundel
County jail, establishing the warden's pay at $5,000 per year,
increasing the per diem allowance of the sheriff for prisoners,
allowing one hundred and twenty-five dollars ($125) monthly for
a jail physician, and establishing a jail matron, assistant matron
and their salaries.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 2-33 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Anne Arundel
County (1957 Edition), being Article 2 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland, title "Anne Arundel County", sub-title "Sher-
iff", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments,
to read as follows:

2-33. The sheriff shall be allowed a warden, jail matron and
assistant jail matron
and such other personnel as deemed necessary
by the county commissioners to adequately operate and maintain the
jail, such warden and other personnel to be appointed by the county
commissioners upon recommendation by the sheriff. The compensa-
tion of the warden shall be five thousand dollars ($5,000) per year,
the compensation of the jail matron and assistant matron, three
thousand dollars ($3,000) per year and fifteen hundred dollars
($1,500) per year, respectively,
and compensation of such other per-
sonnel shall be set by the county commissioners. The sheriff shall be
allowed the sum of twenty-five dollars per month for clerical work
and record keeping at the jail, and he shall be allowed for his actual
expenditures for food, provisions and necessary supplies furnished
the prisoners confined in jail; provided, that the total cost of the
food so furnished shall not exceed the sum of [seventy-five cents]
one dollar and twenty-five cents per day for each prisoner so con-
fined and for the warden, the night guard and the cook. He may
select a physician or physicians to care for any prisoners in need of
medical treatment, and he may reimburse such physicians amounts
required, not to exceed one hundred and twenty-five dollars ($125)
per month.
The sheriff shall keep an itemized account of all such
expenditures and in the form and system prescribed by the county
commissioners, and shall make a report of such expenditures accord-
ing to such form and system to the county commissioners at their
first meeting in every month, accompanied by a statement showing
the actual number of prisoners and attendants daily supplied during
such period, and the county commissioners upon examination of such
account and finding the same to be correct and within the limits
herein provided, shall pay the same to the sheriff. The sheriff shall
be responsible for the conduct in office of the persons so appointed
and shall, recommend to the county commissioners the cancellation
of such appointments at any time he deems such action necessary.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.
