of Our Lord God Seventeen hundred thirty & eight at the parish afd in
the County afd and within the Jurisdiction of this Court did commit
fornication with a Certain Person to the Jurors afd unknown and
did Permit the Same unknown person then & there to have carnall
knowledge of her body and to beget then and there a Bastard Child on
the body of her the same Jane to the high displeasure of Almighty God to
the evil Example of all others in such case Offending Contrary to
the Peace of the same Lord Propry his good rule & Government &c
And against the form of the Act of Assembly in such case lately made
& provided &c                           D Dulany pr Dno. Propry
On the Back of the afd Indictmt. was Indorsed as fol. Vizt.
                 A True Bill pr Chrisr. Hall foreman
And now here to wit at Kent County Court at the Court house in the
Town of Chester in said County on the third tuesday of March being the
twentyeth day of said month in the year of Our Lord God One thousd.
seven hundred thirty and eight Cometh the afd Lord Propry by Danl.
Dulany his Attorney and prayeth that the afd Jane to the Indictmt.
afd may Answer       And the afd Jane in her proper person comes &
defends the force and junry when &c And saith that She cannot gainsay
the Indictment afd so as afd against her brought nor can she say but
that she is guilty of the premisses afd above upon her Imposed as by
the Indictment afd it is alledged and thereof Submits to the Court &c
Therefore it is Considered by the Justices here to wit at Kent Coty.
Court at the Court house in the Town of Chester in said County on the third
tuesday of March being the twentyeth day of said month in the year of
Our Lord Seventeen hundred thirty and eight that the afd Jane Reed pay
the sum of One pound ten shillings Current money of Maryland as a
Fine According to Act of Assembly for Committing the fornication afd
Also it is Considered by the Justices at the time and place afd that
                                     three           fifty three
the afd Jane pay the sum of two ^ hundred five ^ pounds of tobacco
Costs Accrueing on the premisses afd to the Severall Officers of this Court
Ordered by this Court here that the fine afd be delivered the sher. of Kent
                                                                     being prSent in Court
County And Will Simon Wilmer Gent. sher. of Kent County ^ on the
day and year afd and Acknowledgeth the receipt of the same &c
Ordered by this Court here that the afd Jane enter into recoge. with
Security for the Fees Accrueing on the premisses afd to the Severall
Officers of this Court Thereupon Jane Reed of Kent County Spinster
ad Joseph Reed of the County afd planter present here in Court in there
proper persons Acknowledgeth themselves to be Indebted unto his
Lordship the right honourable the Lord Propry of the province of
Maryland in the sum of five hundred pounds of tobo. each to be
made and Leveyed on their bodys goods & Chattles Lands and
Tenements for the Use of his said Lordship his heirs and Succesrs.
With Condition to this Recoge. that Jane Reed do pay the Fees
afd Accrueing on the Premisses afd to the Officers of this Court Then
