in part, the annuity of $4,466 66⅔, the State has occasioned a
loss to the College, of $155,386 66⅔, principal and interest.
Question 3d. How are its funds raised ?
Answer 3d. By the annuity of $3,000 from the State, and
by tuition fees.
Question 4th. What is the number of its graduates, and
how many have graduated each year ?
Answer 4th. Three hundred and eighty-four. Among
whom we find the names of Judge Magruder, Robert H.
Goldsborough, John Leeds Kerr, Gov. Dan'l Martin, Chief
Justice Dorsey, G. Washington Parks Custis, Gov. James
Thomas, David Hoffman, Judge Randall, Hon. Reverdy
Johnson, and his brother, the late Chancellor, Judge Lomax,
Francis Key, and Thomas S. Alexander. The average num-
ber of graduates is between seven and eight, per annum—ex-
cluding the period from 1811 to 1822, when in consequence of
the withdrawal of the State's grant, there was no graduating
class. This gives by no means a full estimate of the educa-
tional power of the College, as numbers leave for the various
avocations of life, who do not complete their academic course.
This need occasion no surprise, as at the great University of
Virginia there graduated last year out of nearly seven hun-
dred students, only fourteen. With our present number,
which is larger than for some years, we shall only graduate
nine, next commencement.
Question 6th. What is the number of Professors, and their
salaries ?
Answer 6th. There are six Professors engaged in the daily
instruction of 104 students. The salaries of these Professors
areas follow:—Principal, $2,000; Vice-Principal, $1,000;
three Professors, $800 each, and one Professor, $600. In ad-
dition to which, after the deduction of the current expenses of
the College, and the gratuitous education of twenty-eight
students and of the sons of clergymen of all religious denomi-
nations, the tuition money is divided among said Professors.
We would remark, that the present arrangement only contin-
ues until October, 1858, after which period the compensation
of the Professors will be reduced to $500, and tuition fees, in
consequence of the investment in buildings recently made of
the lottery grant.
Question 7th. What have been the Principals, Clergymen,
or Laymen, and to what denomination of Christians have they
belonged ?
Answer 7th. 1st—John McDowell. L. L. D., from 1790
to 1807. 2d—Rev. Bethel Judd, from 1807 to 1813. (From
1813 to 1820, there was no Principal, owing to the withdrawal
