To the Legislature of Maryland:

The following Report is respectfully submitted in accord-
ance with the second section of the sixth article of the Con-
stitution.

RECEIPTS.

Statement A, of the Appendix, shows the total receipts
into the Treasury in the fiscal year, which ended the 30th
of September, 1857, to have been $1,384,705.40.

There remained in the Treasury on the 30th September,

1856,  $592,936.32, which added to the receipts of the year,
make an aggregate in the Treasury, for the fiscal year, of
$1,977,641.72.

Of the receipts in 1857, the sum of $958,746.44 was for
revenue which accrued in that year, and $425,958.96 for rev-
nue which accrued in former years.

By a comparison of the total receipts in 1856 with those in

1857,  an excess will appear in favor of the latter year to the
amount of $154,333.40; but there is included in the receipts
of 1857, the sum of $275,770.23, which was received in
settlement of the State's claim against the United States; and
this sum being deducted, there appears a falling off in the
total receipts for 1857, as compared with the preceding year,
of $121,436.83.

This may be accounted for, to some extent, by the repeal
of the Stamp Duties, on account of which $40,123.23 were
received into the Treasury in 1856; and, it must also be
borne in mind that the revenue for direct taxes in arrears is
gradually diminishing.
