Under royal government (1690-1715) there were two Attorneys General, one for
the Proprietary and one for the King. The office was continued under the Con-
stitution of 1776. Other places held by any Attorney General during his incum-
bency are indicated in each case.

1. Lt. Richard Smith, Sr., of Calvert County (Prot.), appointed by the
Provincial Court, 23 Sept. 1657 (AM, X, 542).

2. Capt. Thomas Manning of Calvert County (Prot.), com. by the Lt. Gen.,
20 Feb. 1660/1 (AM, III, 403).

3. Col. William Calvert of St. Mary's City (Cath.), sworn 12 June 1666
(Prov. Ct. Rec., 1. FF, f. 370).

4. *Col. Vincent Lowe of Talbot County (Cath.), sworn 13 Dec. 1670 (AM,
LI, 35). Resigned after appointed Sheriff of Talbot County.

5. Kenelm Cheseldyne of St. Mary's City (Prot.), sworn 6 April 1676 (Prov.
Ct. Rec., 1. NN, f. 89).

6. Thomas Burford of Charles County (Prot.) appointed by His Lordship and
sworn 4. Oct. 1681 (AM, XVII, 33; Prov. Ct. Judgements, 1. 1, f. 427); died in
office in March, 1686/7.

7. Robert Carvile of St. Mary's City (Cath.), com. by Chancellor Henry
Darnall, pursuant to Lord Baltimore's instructions, 3 April 1688 (AM, VIII, 16;
Prov. Ct. Rec., 1. WRC #1, f. 468).

8. *Charles Carroll of St. Mary's City and of Anne Arundel County (Cath.),
