Council, 22 Sept 1693 (AM, XIX, 60). Superseded by Andrew.

26. Sir Edmund Andros, Knt. (Prot.), Governor of Virginia, took posses-
sion of the Maryland government on 25 Sept. 1693 under a commission dated 3
March 1691 (AM, XIX, 62; XX, 7). On 15 Feb. 1693/4 he appointed Col. Nicholas

Greenberry Chancellor to succeed Blakiston, deceased (AM, XX, 46). He soon

returned to Virginia.

27. Col. Nicholas Greenberry (Prot.), left in charge, as President of
the Council, by Andros (AM, XIX, 65-66); superseded by Lawrence.

28. Sir Thomas Lawrence. Bart , reinstated as President, 7 May 1694 (AM,
XX, 59); superseded by Nicholson.

29. Col. Francis Nicholson (Prot.), com. 10 Feb. 1693/4; assumed office
26 July 1694 (AM, XIX, 25; XX, 83). On 30 July he appointed Col. Henry Jowles
Chancellor to succeed Greenberry (AM, XX, 128). In the winter of 1694-95 the
seat of government was moved from St. Mary's City to Annapolis. Nicholas was

appointed Governor of Virginia in 1698.

30. Col. Nathaniel Blakiston (Prot., nephew of Col. Nehemiah Blakiston
above), com. 19 Oct. 1698; assumed office 2 Jan. 1698/9; took the Great Seal
from Col. Jowles, 6 July 1699; left for England, 30 June 1708 (AM, XXV, 51;
XXII, 310), He was the Maryland Agent in London, 1702-09 and 1713-21.

31. Thomas Tench (Prot.), left in charge as President of the Council (AM,
XXV, 125); superseded by Seymour.
