50                JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 11,

chair to take into consideration the report from the commis-
sioner, Captain T. J. Lee, to this House, and report there-

on.

Messrs. Long, Dennis, of Somerset, Gordon, Barnard and
Jacobs were constituted said committee.

On motion of Mr. Kessler,

Leave was granted the Frederick county delegation to re-
port a bill to authorise and direct the Clerk of the Circuit
Court for Frederick county to put on record among the land
records of said county a deed given by John Scherr and
Catharine Scherr to Elias L. Delashmut and Daniel Zacha-
rias.

The hour having arrived for taking up the order of the
day, the House proceeded to the consideration of the resolu-
tions introduced by Mr. Denison, of Baltimore county, on
Monday last.

Mr. Dennis, of Somerset, offered the following substitute:

Whereas, a portion of the Representatives in Congress from
this State, by their refusal to vote for the Hon. John A. Gil-
mer, on more than one occasion, at a time when their votes,
together with the votes of those with whom they acted,
would have elected him Speaker of the House of Representa-
tives, thereby securing an organization of the House on a
sound, national basis, honorable and advantageous to the
South; and whereas, they did on said occasions give their
votes to an unavailable candidate; therefore,

Resolved, That it is the sense of this House that the reso-
lutions passed by this House on the 6th instant were intend-
ed to reflect upon their conduct, and to declare that they have
failed to act in accordance with the best interests of the South,
or properly to reflect the views of the people of the State of
Maryland.

Mr. Freaner moved to lay the substitute on the table.
The yeas and nays were ordered and appeared as follow :
