So the motion to lay upon the table was lost.

Mr. Ford moved to refer the subject to the committee on
Federal Relations;

Mr. Dennis, of Somerset, proposed as a substitute, to make
them the order of the day for Wednesday next;

Which was assented to.

Also, the resolutions of the General Assembly of Vir-
ginia, touching the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and request-
ing the attention of the General Assembly thereto;

Which were read, and referred to the committee on Ways
and Means.

Also, the report of the trustees of the Shephard Insane
Asylum;

Referred to the committee on Ways and Means.

Also, the address of the Washington National Monument
Society, and a letter from its committee;                           

Referred to the Committee on Federal Relations.
The Secretary of the Senate delivered the following:

A bill entitled, an act to compensate Charles F. Goldsbo-
rough, of Dorchester county, for expenses incurred by him in
going to Caroline county, under appointment of the Govern-
or, as special counsel for the State of Maryland;

Which was read the first time, and referred to the commit-
tee on Claims.

Mr. Ford, from a select committee, reported favorably on
the bill entitled, an act for the relief of James Evans, a con-
stable in and for the first election district of Baltimore
county;                                        

Which was read the first time, and by special order a
second and third time, and passed by yeas and nays as fol-
