1856.] OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES.           859

1853 and 1854, did me the honor to subscribe for one hundred
and ninety copies of each of the four volumes of the Maryland
Chancery Decisions, by Chancellor Johnson, upon the pledges
made by me to the Legislature, that the work should be performed
in a manner to meet the Chancellor's approbation; and upon my
exclusive responsibility.

The entire work having been completed, and the volumes de-
livered to the State, I beg leave to lay before the Legislature the
following communication from the late Chancellor Johnson, ap-
proving the work, and respectfully ask that it may be received
and entered upon the Journal of the House of Delegates.

JAMES WINGATE.

Annapolis, 9th Sept., 1854.
To James Wingate, Esq.

At your request, I cheerfully say, that the reporting and pub-
lishing the four volumes of Maryland Chancery Decisions, have
been performed in a very satisfactory manner, and that the proof-
sheets of a portion of the work were examined by myself.

I am pleased to learn from you, as publisher, that your enter-
prise has been successful.

Respectfully your ob't serv't,

J. JOHNSON.

The Secretary of the Senate returned

The bill entitled, an act making appropriations for the support
of the Government for the year ending January 1st, 1858;

Endorsed "passed by yeas and nays, with proposed amend-
ments;"

Amendments Proposed.

After the word "dollars," in the 28th line of 1st section, in-
sert "to the State Agricultural Chemist two thousand dollars;"

Sec. 1, 14th line, strike out, after the word "dollars," "for the
use of the Insane Asylum, ten thousand dollars;"

The question being,

"Will the House assent to the first amendment?"

The yeas and nays were demanded, and appeared as follows:

Affirmative.

Messrs. Speaker,

Jarrett,

Plowden,
