to the contrary in any wife notwithftanding.

C H A P.
XVIII.

X. And be it enacted, That the commiffioners appointed by this act for build-
ing the prifon therein mentioned, or a majority of them, as foon as the fame
fhall be in fufficient forwardnefs to receive the debtors, or other perfons com-
mitted to the cuftody of the fheriff of faid county, be authorifed and directed to
fell the prifon now ufed in faid county, and the ground thereto belonging, on
fuch notice and on fuch credit as they fhall think proper, and the money arifing
therefrom, when received, to be applied towards defraying the county charges of
faid county.

C H A P. XIX.
An ACT to alter the times of holding the county courts in
Caroline and Dorchefter counties.

Be it enacted by the General Affembly of Maryland, That the county court
of Caroline county fhall hereafter commence and be held on the firft
Monday in March in each year, inftead of the fecond Monday of that
month as now fixed by law, and the county court of Dorchefter county on the
third Monday of March in each year, inftead of the fourth Monday in that
month as now eftablifhed.

II. And be it enacted, that the county court of Caroline county, which now
ftands adjourned to the fecond Monday in March next, fhall be and is hereby
adjourned to the firft Monday in that month, and that Dorchefter county court,
now adjourned to the fourth Monday in March next, fhall be and is hereby ad-
journed to the third Monday in the fame month.

III. And be it enacted, That all procefs whatsoever now iffued, or that may
be iffued, in the refpective counties of Caroline and Dorchefter, returnable to the
fecond and fourth Mondays in March next refpectively, or to any particular days
in the firft or fecond fucceeding weeks, fhall be returnable and returned to the
firft and third Mondays in the fame month, or to correfponding days in the firft
or fecond week fucceeding the fame refpectively; and all caufes, pleas and pro-
ceedings, civil and criminal, returnable to and depending before the faid county
courts of Caroline and Dorchefter counties, at the refpective times of their laft
adjournment, fhall be returned and continued to the firft and third Mondays in
March next in the fame counties refpectively, in the fame manner as if the faid
caufes, pleas and proceedings, had been regularly continued to the faid refpective
times appointed by this act for holding the feveral county courts of Caroline and
Dorchefter aforefaid.

C H A P. XX.
An ACT to authorife and empower the levy court of Dorchefter
county to affefs and levy a fum of money for the purpofe there-
in mentioned.

WHEREAS it hath been reprefented to this general affembly, by the
petition of the juftices of the levy court of Dorchefter county, and
fundry other inhabitants thereof, that the records of faid county are
unfafe, and liable to be deftroyed, by reafon of a private dwelling-houfe being
contiguous to the court-houfe of faid county, and that a part of faid court-
houfe ftands upon a lot of ground formerly the property of a certain Jofeph
Dowfon, and it hath been prayed that a fum of money may be levied on the faid
county for the purpofe of purchafing the faid lot of ground, for the ufe of the
county; and the prayer of the faid petition being deemed reafonable, therefore,

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That it fhall and
may be lawful for the juftices of Dorchefter county levy court, and they are
hereby authorifed and required, at their next meeting, to affefs and levy on their
county a fum not exceeding two thoufand eight hundred dollars, together with
