(Senate Bill 6)
AN ACT to add new Sections 333A, 333B, 333C and 338D to Article
27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title
"Crimes and Punishments", to follow immediately after Section
333 thereof, and to be under the new sub-title "Humane Slaughter
of Livestock", providing certain requirements f or the commercial
slaughtering of livestock, defining the humane methods that may
be used, providing for the enforcement of this Act, and relating
generally to the treatment and slaughtering of livestock in this
State.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Sections 333A, 333B, 333C and 333D be and they are
hereby added to Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957
Edition), title "Crimes and Punishments", to follow immediately
after Section 333 thereof, and to be under the new sub-title "Humane
Slaughter of Livestock", and to read as follows:
Humane Slaughter of Livestock
383A. (a) As used in this sub-title these words are defined and
shall be applied as follows:
(b) "Person" means any individual, partnership, corporation, or
association doing business in this State, in whole or in part.
(c) "Slaughterer" means any person regularly engaged in the
commercial slaughtering of livestock.
(d) "Livestock" means cattle, calves, sheep, swine, horses, mules,
goats and any other animal which can or may be used in and for
the preparation of meat or meat products, but does not include
poultry or fowl.
(e) "Packer" means any person engaged in the business of slaugh-
tering, or of manufacturing or preparing meat or meat products for
sale, either by such person or others; or of manufacturing or pre-
paring livestock products for sale by such person or others.
(f) "Stockyard" means any place, establishment or facility com-
monly known as a stockyard, conducted or operated for compensation
or profit as a public market, consisting of pens, or other enclosures,
and their appurtenances, for the handling, keeping and holding of
livestock for the purpose of sale or shipment.
