CHAPTER 270

(Senate Bill 1)

AN ACT to repeal Sections 83 to 87, inclusive, of Article 65 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition) title "Militia," sub-
title "Arsenal and Veterans Memorial Commission", to repeal the
laws creating the Arsenal and Veterans Memorial Commission,
to repeal its powers and duties, and relating generally thereto.

Whereas, By Chapter 49 of the Special Session of 1936 and
subsequent enactments, the Arsenal and Veterans Memorial Com-
mission was created to manage the buildings and property formerly
comprising the Old Confederate Soldiers' Home in Pikesville,
Maryland; and

Whereas, This property had been transferred to the State of
Maryland by the Federal Government in 1880 and from 1888 until
prior to 1936 it was occupied as a soldiers' home; and

Whereas, From 1936 until 1949 the property was used for public
or civic purposes, and on the latter date the State authorized its
transfer to the Department of Maryland State Police for use as its
headquarters; and

Whereas, Since 1956, no appointments have been made to the
Commission and it has received no appropriations, and the legislation
creating the Arsenal and Veterans Memorial Commission should
now be repealed, since the Commission can serve no further useful
purpose; now, therefore

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 83 to 87, inclusive, of Article 65 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Militia", sub-title "Arsenal
and Veterans Memorial Commission", be and they are hereby
repealed.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.
