in any place in said county any service incident to the office of
deputy sheriff, which they may be by the Sheriff ordered to do and
perform, and such deputies shall not be entitled to demand or be
paid any further or other compensation for the rendition of any
service incident to their office than that provided in this section. The
County Council is hereby authorized and directed to levy and collect
annual taxes on the property assessable for taxation in said County
in such amount as may be necessary for the payment of the salaries
and allowances as specified in this section.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby de-
clared to be an emergency law and necessary for the immediate
preservation of the public health and safety, and being passed upon
a yea and nay vote, supported by three-fifths of all the members
elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly, the same
shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(Senate Bill 319)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(a) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", providing
certain perquisites for the sheriff and deputy sheriff of Allegany
County and making further provisions for a clerk-bookkeeper in
the sheriff's office.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (a) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to
read as follows:
37.
(a) Allegany County.—The Sheriff of Allegany County shall
receive an annual salary of $4,800.
The Sheriff shall appoint, subject to the provisions of Sections 63A
to 63-I of the Allegany County Code (1955 Edition), sub-title "Clas-
sified Service", five (5) deputies at an annual salary of not less than
$3,300 each; one of said deputies shall be assigned to the Sheriff to
attend the magistrate for juvenile causes to execute his process,
orders and directions, and when not so engaged, to perform such
other duties as the Sheriff may require.
The Sheriff is allowed free rent and maintenance, in addition to
the salary specified in this subsection. Deputy sheriffs are entitled
