considered the most stirring martial hymn ever written; now, there-
fore, be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That this, the
1959 session of the Maryland Legislature, take cognizance in a big
way of the important role Maryland played in the stupendous con-
flict known as the American Civil War; that our State recognize
it as the only war, of all its wars, in which Americans surrendered,
but even then only to other Americans; that Maryland play the role
again of the "Toleration State" and a friendly "Border State", which
tried to dispense toleration, goodwill and peace to her sister states,
North and South, and emphasize these things during the Civil War
Centennial, together with the Century of Peace since then within the
Nation, together with unity and friendship; and be it further

Resolved, That a memorial be set up by the State to Governor
Thomas Holliday Hicks and TO call mankind's attention to his efforts
to preserve the comradeship and loyalty of the Old Maryland Line
and his endeavor to maintain the peace among the several states; that
an effort be made to extend this spirit around the world to all man-
kind as a basis for a world brotherhood; and be it further
