Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate preser-
vation of the public health and safety and having been passed by a
yea and nay vote, supported by three-fifths of all the members elected
to each of the two Houses of the General Assembly of Maryland, the
same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 60
(House Bill 92)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 38 (u)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1956 Supple-
ment) title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", pro-
viding that in Washington County the allowance for expenses of
the sheriff shall be set from time to time in the discretion of the
County Commissioners and correcting an error therein.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38 (u) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1956 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

38. Salaries and expenses; deputies.

(u) Washington County.—The sheriff of Washington County shall
receive an annual salary of $3,000 plus [$1,200] such sum for ex-
penses, [which may be increased to $1,400] as may be set from time
to time
in the discretion of the county commissioners, and $600 a year
for the sheriff's automobile to be used by him in the performance of
his duties. He may appoint an office deputy at an annual salary to
be set by the county commissioners of Washington County; and two
deputies who shall each receive an annual salary of at least $2,400
and $50 per month each for the use of their automobiles; one secre-
tary who shall receive an annual salary of $1,800; a chief warden of
the jail, who shall receive an annual salary of at least $2,400; and
assistant warden who shall receive an annual salary of at least $2,100;
an attorney to the sheriff who shall receive annual compensation in
the amount of $600; and a cook who shall receive at least $1,800 per
year. [Sheriff] The sheriff may appoint such additional special
deputies as he may deem necessary with the approval of the county
commissioners as to number and compensation. The salaries speci-
fied hereinabove in this sub-section except as to the sheriff, shall be
deemed to be minimum salaries and may be increased from time to
time by the county commissioners of Washington County.
