CHAPTER 246
(House Bill 160)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 38 (k) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition),
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", relating to
the seting of the expenses of the Sheriff of Garrett County. THE
SALARY OF THE SHERIFF AND DEPUTY SHERIFF OF
GARRETT COUNTY AND TO THE SETTING OF THE EX-
PENSES OF THE SHERIFF.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38 (k) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1951 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted with amendments, to read
as follows:

38 (k) The Sheriff of Garrett County shall receive an annual salary
of $2,000 AND ON AND AFTER JANUARY 1, 1959, AN ANNUAL
SALARY OF $3,600 and [$600 per year] such sum as may be set
from time to time in the discretion of the County Commissioners,
for
expenses. He shall appoint a deputy who shall receive an annual
salary of $1,500 $2,700 and shall act as warden of the jail. The
Sheriff shall be allowed extra car mileage and out-of-county mileage
at the rate of ten cents per mile. He shall be allowed eighty cents
per day for boarding each prisoner committed to the County Jail.
He may appoint a cook for said jail who shall receive a salary of
$50 per month.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate preser-
vation of the public health and safety and having been passed by a
yea and nay vote, supported by three-fifths of all the members elected
to each of the two Houses of the General Assembly of Maryland, the
same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 247
(House Bill 169)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 86 of
Article 16 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition),
title "Chancery", sub-title "Adoption", amending the definition
of the term "child" in order to include other designations, said
definition relating to the legal effects of a decree of adoption.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 86 of Article 16 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
