SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That in the event that any
part of this Act shall be found invalid by any court of competent
jurisdiction, the remaining parts of the Act shall continue in full
force and effect.

SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall be subject
to a referendum of the legally qualified voters of the La Vale Zoning
District, as said District is defined herein. The referendum shall be
conducted on June 18, 1957, and shall be subject to the general pro-
visions of law contained in Article 33 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland for the conduct of State and County elections in Allegany
County. The Board of County Commissioners and the Board of
Supervisors of Elections of Allegany County shall do such things
and perform such acts as may be necessary and proper to conduct
the special election as provided herein. On the voting machine labels
or on the paper ballots, as the case may be, there shall be printed a
summary of the provisions of this Act together with the words,
"For Zoning District" and "Against Zoning District", with suitable
provision made whereby the voter may indicate his choice on said
questions. If a majority of the persons voting in said special elec-
tion shall vote "For Zoning District", the provisions of this Act
shall become effective immediately upon an official canvass of the
votes and a declaration to this effect by the Board of Supervisors
of Elections of Allegany County. If a majority of the persons voting
shall vote "Against Zoning District", the Board of Supervisors of
Elections shall so declare and this Act shall then be null and void
and of no further effect whatsoever.

Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That the Board of Super-
visors of Elections of Allegany County shall promptly report to the
Clerk of the Circuit Court for Allegany County the results of the
said referendum; and the said Clerk of the Court shall promptly
certify the results of the referendum to the Secretary of State and
to the State Comptroller.

Sec. 6. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

(Senate Bill 444)

AN ACT to repeal (Section 233A of Article 18 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "Queen Anne's
County", sub-title "Fire Companies", as enacted or amended by
Chapters 76 of the Acts of 1985, 129 of 1941, 453 of 1945, 453 of
1947 and 380 of 1949, and to add new Section 233 to said Article
of the Code, to follow immediately after Section 232 thereof and
