to assign any convicted prisoner therein to manual work for the
maintenance and upkeep of any building or premises owned by
the Board of County Commissioners or by any department or
agency of the County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 182 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Baltimore
County (1955 Edition—being Article 3 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland), said section being under "Title 14—Jail and
Jail Warden", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

182. The warden shall appoint a deputy warden, to be paid a
compensation by the County Commissioners of Baltimore County
of Ninety Dollars per month, and he may appoint such watchman
and assistants as the said Commissioners may in writing direct, to
be paid a compensation by said Commissioners of not less than two
and one-half dollars per day; the County Commissioners shall fur-
nish the jail building, including the dwelling part thereof, with all
necessary fuel and all requisite food and supplies for the prisoners
confined in the jail, and the warden shall have the same cooked and
prepared for such prisoners; the warden shall have the right to
require the requisite manual work about the prison building and
premises to be done by the prisoners; but no unconvicted prisoner
shall be compelled to do any work against his will, beyond taking
care of his or her own cell. Also, the warden is authorized and em-
powered to assign any convicted prisoner in the jail to manual work
for the maintenance and up-keep of any building or premises owned
by the Board of County Commissioners,
BALTIMORE COUNTY,
MARYLAND or by any department or agency of the County.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

CHAPTER 199

(Senate Bill 138)

AN ACT to add new Section 298A to the Code of Public Local Laws
of Baltimore County (1955 Edition), being Article 3 of the Code
of Public Local Laws of Maryland, title "Baltimore County",
sub-title "Pensions", sub-heading "Police Department System",
to follow immediately after Section 298 thereof, providing for the
repayment of money paid into the special fund to officers or em-
ployees of the Police Department of Baltimore County who cease
to be such for any reason after serving for more than ten (10)
years.
