vehicles. Vehicles more than 96 inches in width, or carrying objects
in excess of that width, present a hazard to the traveling public which
should continue to be controlled by the State Roads Commission
through its restrictive permits.

All Maryland road designs contemplate vehicles with a maximum
width of 96 inches. Unless this width remains constant, our roads
might well .be outmoded before they have even served their normal
expectancy.

In view of the aforegoing, I have vetoed House Bill 641.

Respectfully,

(s) Theodore R. McKeldin,

Governor.

House Bill No. 663—Motor Vehicles Hauling Logs

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 277 of
Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1956 Supple-
ment), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Operation of Vehicles
Upon the Highways", relating to the length of motor vehicles upon
the highways.

April 15, 1957.

Hon. John C. Luber

Speaker of the House of Delegates

State House

Annapolis, Maryland

Dear Mr. Speaker:

House Bill 663 exempts vehicles hauling logs from the 55 foot
length limitation of Section 277 of the Motor Vehicle Code.

The State Roads Commission advises that the hauling of logs with-
out any limitation of length and without the controls of a permit
issued by the Commission, presents a very definite safety hazard to
other motorists, particularly after dark. The few existing exemptions,
which were a part of the original law, should, in my opinion, not be
extended, and no sound reason has been presented for so doing.

I have, therefore, vetoed House Bill 663.

Respectfully,

(s) Theodore R. McKeldin,

Governor.
