dividual recognition among a large group of public school teachers,
the Committee still believed that some worth-while efforts might be
made to grant such recognition; and
Whereas, the Committee pointed out that actually every teacher's
performance must be evaluated in some respects, since, on the one
hand, there are teachers rejected for further service by reasons of
inefficiency, immorality, misconduct in office, insubordination and
willful neglect of duty, while, on the other hand, the promotion of
teachers to administrative and supervisory positions also calls for
evaluation; and
Whereas, it has been suggested that one method of reward for
outstanding teachers might be the creation of a position known as
"Master Teacher" at a somewhat higher scale of pay, so that the
superior teacher might be recognized and, at the same time, would
remain in teaching work rather than in supervisory or administrative
work; now, therefore be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the State De-
partment of Education, in cooperation with the several local Boards
of Education, be requested to study the desirability AND FEASI-
BILITY of giving formal recognition of meritorious service per-
formed by public school teachers, in order to encourage their best
efforts and to retain outstanding teachers in actual teaching work;
and be it further
Resolved, That the State Department of Education be requested to
report the results of its study to the Legislative Council by Septem-
ber 1, 1957.

Joint Resolution requesting that State Officials hereafter include
the Eastern Orthodox Church in any future references to the major
religious faiths in proclamations, papers, forms and documents.
Whereas, the Eastern Orthodox Church is an historic branch of
Christianity and a major religious faith in the United States and in
the State of Maryland; and
Whereas, it has been noted that, in references to the major reli-
gious faith FAITHS in proclamations, papers, forms and documents
issued and presented by officials of this State, the Eastern Orthodox
Church has been omitted; and
Whereas, this State has a singular reputation and history of
tolerance, recognition and respect for religious institutions; now,
therefore, be it
