WHEREAS, THE STATE OF MARYLAND, IN THE EXER-
CISE OF ITS RIGHT AS OWNER OF THE BED OF THE PO-
TOMAC RIVER, DETERMINES THAT IT IS NECESSARY FOR
THE PRESERVATION OF THE PUBLIC PEACE AND SAFETY
ON THE POTOMAC RIVER, AND FOR THE PROTECTION AND
PRESERVATION OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES LYING
THEREIN, TO TAKE SUCH ACTION AS IS NECESSARY TO
MAINTAIN THE BENEFITS OF THE POTOMAC RIVER FOR
THE MUTUAL BENEFIT OF ITS CITIZENS AND ALL OTHERS
WHO HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE ON SAID RIVER; NOW,
THEREFORE,
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Chapter 1 of the Acts of the General Assembly of Maryland
of 1785 be and the same is hereby repealed.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

AN ACT to repeal Chapter 484 of the Acts of the General Assembly
of Maryland of 1949, said Act proposing the addition of 15 new-
articles to the Compact of 1785.
Whereas, By Chapter 484 of the Acts of 1949 the General Assembly
of Maryland proposed the addition of 15 new articles to the Compact
of 1785, relating to the establishment of a Maryland Virginia Chesa-
peake Potomac Authority; and
Whereas, This Act has not been concurred in by the State of
Virginia as would have been necessary in order to give it effect; and
Whereas, In view of the doubtful status of the Compact of 1785
and of the poor record of the State of Virginia in enforcing com-
pact of 1785, it is highly desirable that the State of Maryland with-
draw this offer for an amendment to the earlier Compact; now there-
fore
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Chapter 484 of the Acts of the General Assembly of Maryland
of 1949 be and it is hereby repealed.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.
