CHAPTER 764
(House Bill 200)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 306 and
307 of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951
Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Traffic Court of Balti-
more City", relating to appointment of traffic court magistrates
at large and the salaries of all traffic court magistrates.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 306 and 307 of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Motor Vehicles", sub-title "Traffic
Court of Baltimore City", be and they are hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, and all to read as follows:

306.   (Magistrates' Salaries.) The Governor shall designate one of
said Justices to be known as Chief Magistrate of the Traffic Court
whose duties shall be to care for the general business of said Court
and to have complete charge of the administration thereof with
supervisory control over the several clerks and other employees
assigned thereto.

The Governor shall designate four or more of said Justices to be
known as Magistrates of the Traffic Court.

[The salaries of all Traffic Court Magistrates shall be such as shall
be provided for in the State Budget.] The salary of the Chief Magis-
trate of the Traffic Court shall be Seven Thousand Dollars per annum;
the salary of each of the other Traffic Court Magistrates shall be Six
Thousand Dollars per annum.

307.   ([Substitute] Magistrates [.] at large.) The Governor may
designate one or more [ NO MORE THAN TWO of the Justices of
the Peace, provided for in Section 405 of Article 4 of the Code of
Public Local Laws of Maryland (1949 Edition) ] persons as [Substi-
tute] Magistrates at large of the Traffic Court of Baltimore City, in
addition to those provided for in Section 305 in this Article.

These [Substitute] Magistrates at large shall be called upon to
preside in the Traffic Court of Baltimore City, in the absence of the
regularly assigned Chief Magistrate or Magistrates of the Traffic
Court.

The assignment of any such [Substitute] Magistrate at large shall
be made by the Chief Magistrate [, or in the event the Chief Magis-
trate has not assigned a Substitute Magistrate, the Supervisor may
call upon a Substitute Magistrate to act].

The salary of each said [Substitutes] Magistrates at Large shall
be [fixed and paid out of the funds provided for that purpose in the
State Budget] Six Thousand Dollars per annum.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957. IS HEREBY DECLARED TO BE AN EMERCENCY
