CHAP. 71.

Protectors, and
their successors,

made able to sue,

&c.

6. And be it enacted. That the protectors aforesaid, and their
successor in office, duly elected by the name aforesaid, shall be
able and capable in law to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded,
answer and be answered, defend and be defended, in all or any
court of justice whatsoever, and also to make, have and use, a
common seal, and the same to break, alter, and renew at pleasure,
and that this act of incorporation, and every part thereof, shall bo
good and available in law, in all things, according to the true in-
tent and meaning thereof, and shall be construed, reputed and ad-
judged, in all cases most favourably on behalf of the said institu-
tion, so as must effectually to answer the valuable ends intended
thereby.

CHAPTER 72.

An act for the relief of Emily Hicks Davis, of the City of
Baltimore.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
Emily Hicks Davis, of the city of Baltimore, wife of Thomas Sil-
lock Davis, he and is hereby empowered, to convey and transfer
the right and interest by her held in a certain tract of land in
Dorchester county, without her said husband joining in the deed
therefor, and the money arising from such sale to use and employ
for the benefit and support of herself and children, free from the
control of her husband, or liability for his debts.

CHAPTER 73.

An act incorporating a Company to erect a Toll Bridge across
the Potomac River, opposite Shepherd's-Town.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
it shall be lawful to open books, in Sharpsburgh, in the county of
Washington, under the direction of John Blackford, George Smith,
Jacob Miller, Joseph Heddrick, and John Miller, or any two of
them; in Middletown, in Frederick county, under the direction of
Frederick Stemple, Lewis Creager, Adam Lawrence, Henry Stem-
ple, and Henry Motter, or any two of them; in Hager's-town, in
Washington county, under the direction of Otho H. Williams, Ja-
cob Schnebly, Thomas Kellar, Daniel Schnebly, and Thomas
Compton, or any two of them; in Boonsborough, in said county,
under the direction of Mathias Shaffner, Henry Locker, junior,
Ezra Slifer, Michael Stonebraker, and Septimus Stephens, or any
two of them; in Frederick city, in the county of Frederick, under
the direction of George Baer, John Brien, Richard Potts, Samuel
B. Leatherwood, and Benjamin Rutherford, or any two of them;
and in the city of Baltimore, under the direction of William Lorman,
Upton Bruce, Alexander M'Donald, Henry Payson, and Isaac
Burneston, or any two of them; in Shepherd's-town, in Virginia,
under the direction of John Baker, Thomas Van Swearingen,
James S. Lane, Henry Boteler, and Thomas Toole, or any two of
them; in Winchester, in Virginia, under the direction of Edward
M'Guire, Alfred H. Powell, Obed Waite, William Davidson, and
Joseph Tidball, or any two of them; and in Martinsburgh, in Vir-
ginia, under the direction of Elisha Boyd, Philip C. Pendleton,
John R. Cooke, Thomas C. Smith, and William Long, or any two,
of them; for receiving and entering subscriptions to the amount of
