Preamble.

CHAPTER 177.

An act for the relief of John S. Blake, sheriff of Queen Ann's county.
WHEREAS, it appears to this general assembly that the existing
laws are inadequate to authorise the levy court of Queen Ann's
county to allow certain expences unavoidably incurred by the she-
riff of said county, as he is bound to receive all persons legally
committed to the jail of said county, and also to furnish said persons
with provisions; therefore.

ised.

Section. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the levy court of Queen Ann's county be, and they are hereby
directed and empowered to levy on the assessable property of said
county, such sum or sums of money annually as they may be satis-
lied by competent testimony to be justly due and owing to the she-
riff of said county, for such costs and charges as he may incur from
the imprisonment of any person or persons in the jail of said coun-
ty; Provided always, that the said levy court shall not be authorised
to levy such sum or sums until they arc fully satisfied that such per-
son or persons is or are entirely unable to discharge and pay the
same.

2. And be it enacted, That the said levy court be, and they are
hereby directed and required, upon the presentation on oath of the
account of John S. Blake for the support of certain persons hitherto
confined in the jail of Queen Ann's county, who were and still are
unable to pay their jail fees as aforesaid since the commencement of
his sheriffalty, to re-examine and allow the same, if in their judgment
and conscience they shall deem it just and reasonable.

3. And be it enacted, That the levy court aforesaid be, and they are
hereby authorised and directed to levy such sum of money annually
on the county aforesaid, as in their judgment may be sufficient to
furnish the jail of said county with fuel, Provided, that said fuel shall
be used solely for the comfort and benefit of the prisoners in said
jail, together with such sum as may be deemed by said court neces-
sary for the keeping in repair said jail and the appurtenances there-

4. And be it enacted, That the court aforesaid, are hereby empow-
ered to employ a blacksmith by the year, and annually thereafter, to
do the necessary iron work at the jail in said county, if in their opi-
nion it would add to the interest of said county to thus employ such,
workman, and they are further authorised to levy such sum of mo-
ney as they may agree to allow him, on the assessable property of
the county aforesaid.

CHAPTER 178.

An act for the relief of James Nays and his aged mother of Queen
Ann's county.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
levy court of Queen Ann's county, be, and they are hereby author-
ised to levy on the assessable property of the county aforesaid, such
sum of money as they may deem proper for the relief of James
Hays and his aged mother of said county, (not exceeding the sum
of forty dollars) at their next lew, and as long thereafter as they may
see just cause for the same.
