That any justice of the peace for the county aforesaid, shall be au-
thorised to hold an election on the first Monday in March next, for
five commissioners qualified as directed by the original act to which
this is a supplement, in the same manner as directed by the said ori-
ginal act.

Meeting.

2. and be it enacted, That the said commissioners so chosen

assemble on the second Monday in March next ensuing their elec-
tion, instead of the first Monday in April as directed by the origi-
nal act.

 

3. And be it enacted, That all subsequent elections for com-
missioners shall be held at the same time and in the same manner
as directed by the original act.

4. And be it enacted, That the streets and alleys of Cam-
bridge, as well as all that portion of road adjoining thereto which
has heretofore been described and apportioned by the justices of
the levy court for the duties of one overseer, shall henceforth be
subject to the control and jurisdiction of the said commissioners;
who are hereby authorised and required to appoint an overseer or
more if deemed by them necessary, to repair and improve the same
in such manner as shall be provided hereafter by their ordinances
and regulations; and the said overseer or overseers whom they
shall employ, shall be compellable to repair and improve the said
streets, alleys and roads under such reasonable penalties as the
said commissioners may think proper to impose, to be collected as
other penalties and fines imposed by the original law and the sup-
plements thereto; and the justices of the levy court shall have no
jurisdiction or control over the said streets, alleys or portion of
road.

5. And be it enacted, That the commissioners of the town
of Cambridge shall be and they are hereby authorised and empow-
ered, whenever they may deem it necessary for any purpose con-
nected with the regulations and improvement of the town, or the
preservation of good order therein, to levy and impose upon the
assessable property of the town, such a tax as they, in their judg-
ment and discretion may deem reasonable, necessary and proper,

without convening the voters of the town as required by the ori-
ginal act aforesaid; Provided however, That no tax shall ever ex-
ceed in any one year, the rate of fifty cents for every hundred dol-
lars worth of assessable property in the town; and any such tax
when so imposed or levied, shall and may be collected by the bailiff
under the direction of the said commissioners, in the manner and
according to the act of assembly aforesaid to which this is a sup-
plement.

6. And be it enacted, That the said commissioners shall
meet at least four times in every year in stated quarterly meetings
to be appointed by their own ordinances, and at such other times as
by their said ordinances or by their adjournments they may direct.

Sec. 1. BE it enacted By the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the treasurer of the western shore, be, and he is hereby au-
thorised and empowered to issue certificates of stock signed by the
treasurer of the western shore, and countersigned by the clerk of the
