CHAPTER 193.

A further and additional supplement to the act entitled, An act con-
cerning Crimes and Punishments.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted By the General Assembly of Maryland,
That each and every inspector and keeper of the penitentiary, shall,
before he acts as such, take, in addition to the oaths or affirmations
already prescribed by law, the following oath (or affirmation:) "I,
A. B. Keeper (or inspector as the case may be) do solemnly swear
(or affirm as the case may be,) that I will not during my acting as
such, sell either directly or indirectly to the penitentiary, any articles
or thing whatever." And that it shall be the duty of Baltimore city
court, at each and every term, to give in charge to the grand jury,
the provisions of this oath, and also the provisions of the forty-
third section of the original act to which this is a further supple-
ment.

Penalty.

2. And be it enacted, That if any keeper or inspector of the
said penitentiary shall act as keeper or inspector before he takes
the oaths, he shall, upon conviction thereof in Baltimore city court,
pay and forfeit the sum of two hundred dollars, to and for the use
of the state.

Grand jury to
inquire.

3. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of Baltimore
city court, to direct the grand jury attending at each and every term
to inquire if the keeper or inspectors have previous to their acting
as such, taken the oath prescribed by the said section and by this law;
if they have received either directly or indirectly at any time dur-
ing his or their acting as such, any profits on any agency or contract
for furnishing the raw materials for, or for supplies, or for the vic-
tualling of the said penitentiary, or sold any articles or thing what-
soever to the said penitentiary during the time for which he or they
shall be appointed. And it shall be the duty of the said court, at
each and every term, to direct a number not exceeding three of
the grand jury, to examine the books and papers of the said peni-
tentiary so far as may be necessary to ascertain if any keeper or in-
spector has directly or indirectly received, during his acting as
keeper or inspector, any part of the profits on any agency or con-
tract for furnishing the raw materials for, or for the supplies, or for
the victualling of the said penitentiary.

Officers not to
receive more
than allowed
by law.

4. And be it enacted, That it shall not be permitted to the
said inspectors, to give either directly or indirectly, to the officers of
the said penitentiary, any other sum than that allowed by law; and
if any such inspectors shall so do, upon conviction thereof in Bal-
timore city court, each inspector shall forfeit the sum of one hundred
dollars for the use of the state.

A further supplement to the act entitled, An act to regulate the in-
spection of Tobacco,
Sec. 1. Be it enacted By the General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the first day of November next, except as to
Charles and Saint Mary's counties, it shall be the duty of the seve-
ral inspectors of tobacco, before they proceed to discharge the du-
