CHAP. 104.

has now fixed his residence in Baltimore county, owned and pos-
sessed certain slaves in Virginia, whose names are hereinafter ex-
pressed, and who at the time of his removal were hired out to
persons in Virginia, so that he could not bring them with him
into the state within the time prescribed by law for that purpose:
And whereas the said John Patterson has petitioned this general
assembly for permission to bring the said slaves from Virginia in-
to this state, for his own use, the passage of which petition, un-
der the circumstances aforesaid, appears to be reasonable; There-
fore,

Authorised to re-
move slaves into
the state.

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That John
Patterson, of Baltimore county, be and he is hereby authorised
and empowered, to remove and bring into this state from the state
of Virginia, the following negro slaves: Sampson, and Lucy his
wife, and their children, Lewis, Philip, Roben, Jenny, Edward,
John and Welcher, and Will, Cambridge, Sarah, and her child Nan-
cy, at any time within twelve months from the passage of this act,
for the purpose of working or employing such slave or slaves
within this state, in the immediate service of the said John Pat-

terson; Provided, that the said John Patterson shall register the
said negroes with the clerk of Baltimore county court, in the
manner now required by law, within three months from the pas-
sage of this act; And provided also, that he shall not sell the said
negroes for three years after he shall have registered them as
aforesaid.

CHAP. CV.

An Act for the relief of William H. S. Boswell, of Prince-George's County.

WHEREAS William H. S. Boswell, of Prince George's county,

by his petition to this general assembly hath set forth, that in the
year eighteen hundred and seventeen, he hired to Laurence Hoof,
Esq. then residing in Alexandria, in the District of Columbia, a
negro man named Isaac, who is now about the age of twenty-five
years, and has ever since continued in the service of said Lau-
rence Hoof, upon the terms above mentioned: And whereas this
general assembly is satisfied that the above facts stated are true,
and doubts are entertained whether, under the existing laws of
this state, the said negro man can be brought back to this state
without entitling him to his freedom; Therefore,

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it
shall and may be lawful for the said William H. S. Boswell, his
executors or administrators, at any time within twelve months
after the passage of this law, to bring into this state the said ne-
gro man named Isaac, and to have and to hold the said negro
man as a slave, as fully and amply as if he had never been re-
moved from the state, any law to the contrary notwithstanding.

CHAP CVI.
An Act authorising Robert W. Kent, of Anne-Arundel County, to remove cer-
tain Negroes into the State of Maryland.

WHEREAS the said Robert W. Kent, is desirous of bringing
from the state of Virginia a negro woman, and her child, the
wife and son of one of his slaves, who were a few years since
removed from this state to the state of Virginia, and from mo-
