either within or beyond the limits of the State
of Maryland, as a slave for a period of not less
than three nor more than twelve years. Fifth,
if any free negro shall be convicted hereafter,
of feloniously taking and carrying away the per-
sonal goods of another person, under the value
of five dollars, or if any free negro shall break
into any shop, storehouse, tobacco house, ware-
house, barn, stable, corn or meat house, or other
out house, although the same be not contigu-
ous to, or used with any mansion house, and
stealing money, goods or chattels, under the
value of one dollar, he shall be sentenced to be
sold, as a slave for a period of not less than two
nor more than five years. Sixth, and if any free
negro shall after the passage of this act, be con-
victed of wilfully burning any, or attempt to burn,
or conspiring with other person to burn, any Court
House, county or public prison, or the peniten-
tiary, poor house, warehouse or any building be-
longing to the State, or to any county, town or
city in this State, or to any body corporate, or any
church, college, academy or school house, or any
building of any kind whatsoever, whether pri-
vate, public or corporate property, such free ne-
gro, his aiders or abettors and counsellors, being
free negroes, and each of them shall be sentenced
to be punished by hanging by the neck as now
provided by law, or in the discretion of the court
to be sold either within or beyond the limits of the
State, as a slave for life. Seventh, and if any free
negro shall after the passage of this act, be con-
victed of having enticed, persuaded or assisted
any slave, servant or negro apprentice, knowing
him or her to be such, to run away from his or her
lawful owner, possessor or master, or shall be con-
victed of aiding and assisting such slave, servant
or negro apprentice to run away, or of harboring
such runaway slave, servant or negro apprentice,
knowing him or her to be such, shall be sentenced
in the discretion of the court, to be sold as a slave
for not less than five years or for life, either within
or beyond the limits of the State of Maryland.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That when any free
negro shall have been sentenced to be sold under
