A BILL entitled an act authorising the payment to
George W. Nutwell of a certain sum of money
therein mentioned, for the loss of a negro man,
killed in an attempt to secure his arrest.
|
|
|
Preamble.
|
WHEREAS, the act of the General Assembly of
seventeen hundred and fifty-one, chapter four-
teen, section nine, provides that when a fugi-
tive slave shall happen to be slain in an attempt
to apprehend him, it shall be the duty of the
Treasurer of the Shore where such death may
take place, upon the production of such evidence
as is in said act of assembly mentioned, to pay to
the owner or owners the value of such slave, to be
estimated as therein provided; and whereas, all
the requisitions therein stipulated have been com-
plied with; but whereas, the Constitution of the
State provides that no money shall be drawn from
the Treasury of the State except in accordance
with an appropriation made by law; therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General As-
sembly of Maryland, That the Treasurer is hereby
directed to pay, upon the warrant of the Comptroller,
to George W. Nutwell, the sum of one thousand dol-
lars, to compensate him for the loss of said negro.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall be
in force from and after its passage.
