son or persons now owning a ferry over the river Po-
tomac, then the value of such ferry shall be assessed
to the person or persons in the damages aforesaid ;

And provided also, That the damages assessed shall
be fully paid or tendered to the party entitled to re-
ceive the same, before the company aforesaid shall be
entitled to exercise any act of possession or owner-
ship on the land aforesaid.

Proviso.

SBC. 14. And be it enacted, That nothing in
this act contained shall be so construed as to au-
thorise the said company to issue any note, token,
devise, or scrip to be circulated or issued as a cur-
rency.

Banking for-
bid.

SEC. 15. And be it enacted, That this act shall
be in full force and effect from and after the confir-

mation thereof by the Legislature of Virginia.

When to take
effect.

SEC. 16. And be it enacted, That the Legislature
hereby reserves to itself the full right to alter, amend,
or repeal this charter at its pleasure.

CHAPTER 248.

Reservation.

AN ACT to incorporate the Elkton and Sassafras
River Railroad Company.

10, 1856.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That Thomas C. Crookshanks, Griffith
M. Eldridge, Thomas V. Ward, George R. Howard,
James L. Craig, Benjamin F. May, Littleton S.
Cropper, John L. Clayton, Hiram McCullough, Wil-
liam Knight, Richard Seamans, George W. Bennett,
Samuel S. Maffitt, John C. Groome and Davidson D.
Pearce, be and they are hereby appointed commission-
ers to do and perform the several things hereinafter
mentioned, that is to say, they or a majority of them,
shall at any time within two years from the passage of
this act, procure a sufficient number of suitable books
which shall be opened at such time or times, place or
places as they shall think proper, in each of which shall
be made the following entry: "We whose names are
hereunto] subscribed, do promise to pay to the
