SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.

AN ACT to add a new section to Article 77 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title
"Free Scholarships", said new section to be known as Section
254-A, to follow immediately after Section 254 thereof, to be
under the new sub-heading "Peabody Institute of the City of
Baltimore", said new section to provide for certain free scholar-
ships for the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, the
manner of appointment and the conditions of holding such
scholarships.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a new section be and it is hereby added to Article 77 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Public Educa-
tion", sub-title "Free Scholarships", said new section to be known
as Section 254-A, to follow immediately after Section 254 thereof,
to be under the new sub-heading "Peabody Institute of the City of
Baltimore", and to read as follows:
254-A. Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore.

of Baltimore. No student shall hold any such appointment for
a period longer than four years. Each student receiving such an
appointment shall give bond to the State of Maryland, in such
amount and with such security as may be approved by the Presi-
dent of the Board of Trustees of Peabody Institute of the City
of Baltimore, that he or she will teach in the public schools of this
State for not less than two years after leaving the Peabody Institute.
The scholarships provided for in this Section shall be awarded only
after competitive examinations supervised by the Boards of Eduoa-
cation of the counties in which the applicant lives, or by the Board
of School Commissioners of Baltimore City, if the applicant is a
resident of Baltimore City. The form and contents of such examina-
tions shall be specified by and the examinations shall be prepared
and graded by the appropriate authorities of the Peabody Institute
of the City of Baltimore. A list of names of the applicants receiving
the highest grades on the aforesaid examinations from each of the
senatorial districts in this State and from each of the wards in
Baltimore City shall be certified to the State Senators in whose
