(House Joint Resolution 32)
House Joint Resolution requesting the State Roads Commission to
make certain improvements to Maryland Route 528.
WHEREAS, Maryland Route 528 is a four-lane highway 120 feet
wide which runs north from Ocean City to the Delaware State line;
and
WHEREAS, This highway is the only trunk route situate on the
land which divides the Atlantic Ocean from Assawoman Bay; and
WHEREAS, This land between these bodies of water has in recent
years become densely populated as a summer residential area, with
an equal distribution of stores, motels and cottages on the Bay and
Ocean sides of the highway, which is heavily traveled in the summer
months; and
WHEREAS, The lack of lights, signs or other devices to assist pedes-
trians subjects them, especially women and children, to great risk
when crossing such a wide and heavily traveled road; and
WHEREAS, The State Roads Commission plans, by 1962, to con-
struct a concrete "island" down the middle of this highway and
otherwise improve the road, nevertheless, the summer residents of
the area are in grave needs of immediate improvement; now, there-
fore be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the State
Roads Commission be requested (1) to establish convenient inter-
vals on Route 528 for pedestrian crossings, to be marked by painting
the letters PED-X across the highway at a reasonable distance from
the crossing area and by painting wide lines at right angles to the
highway at the crossing area, and (2) to paint a wide line down
the center of Route 528 to mark the division of north and south
bound traffic; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of State be instructed to send copies
of this Resolution to the Chairman of the State Roads Commission
and to the County Commissioners of Worcester County.
