WHEREAS, In June 1956 the Federal Council on Aging and the
Council of State Governments jointly sponsored the 1956 Federal
and State Conference on Aging; and
WHEREAS, In June 1956 the United States Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare, through its Committee on Aging, published
"The States and Their Programs In Aging," the same being a de-
scriptive survey of the organizations and activities of the official
State groups on aging, which at that time numbered almost half of
the States in the Union, containing policy statements, executive
orders, and legislative resolutions; and
WHEREAS, In September 1957 the Council of State Governments
held a Southern Regional Conference in Baltimore, in cooperation
with the Maryland Commission on Interstate Cooperation and the
Maryland Legislative Council; and, in response to a resolution
adopted at that Conference, urging effective methods to expand the
productive opportunities for older persons, has arranged for a
Southern Regional Conference on Aging; and
WHEREAS, It appears desirable and necessary to ascertain at
this time by an appropriate investigation and study what steps
should be taken in Maryland to provide for the aging group in our
population in reference to employment, housing, health, recreation
and general social and economic needs; and
WHEREAS, Such investigation and study can be accomplished by
the establishment of a joint committee of the Legislature to make
such investigation and study and report thereon to the Legislature
and to the Governor; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the President
of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Delegates appoint,
respectively, five members of the Senate and five members of the
House of Delegates as a Joint Legislative Committee to Study the
Problems of the Aging in reference to employment, housing, health,
recreation and general social and economic needs; to determine the
feasibility of establishing a State Commission on Aging; and to
suggest the duties and responsibilities of such a Commission if the
same be recommended; and be it further
Resolved, That the Joint Legislative Committee to Study the
Problems of the Aging may hold hearings, and, for such assistance
as may be required, call upon any and all departments, agencies and
organizations within the State, including the Baltimore City Com-
mission on Aging and the Problems of the Aged, which in 1955
issued a report entitled "Widening The Lengthened Path of Life;"
and be it further
Resolved, That the Joint Legislative Committee to Study the
Problems of the Aging, upon appointment, be requested to meet and
organize promptly, and to submit a report of the results of its
studies, together with any recommendations it may have, to the
General Assembly which convenes in 1959.
