institution's curriculum leading to a teacher's certificate in the public
school system of Maryland, (3) that fhis grades be passing and in
the upper fifty per centum of all persons enrolled in

and
(4) that in the judgment of the institution, his character, tempera-
ment and deportment be of satisfactory potential for a teacher in the
public schools of Maryland.
Sec 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1958.

CHAPTER 54
(Senate Bill 93)
AN ACT to add new Section 465A to Article 66C of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Natural Resources",
sub-title "Livestock", to follow immediately after Section 465 there-
of and to be under the new sub-heading "Rabbits", prohibiting the
importation into or possession within this State, live, of the San
Juan rabbit.
Whereas, The Wild European rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus) is
a pest second only to rats and mice within its native and introduced
range, which includes Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Tierra
del Fuego and other regions, and annually causes, due to its burrow-
ing habits and insatiable appetite for truck and cereal crops and the
bark of trees, millions of dollars of damage and entails great ex-
penditures for control; and
Whereas, A domesticated form of this animal has flourished on
the San Juan Islands, off the coast of the State of Washington; and
Whereas, Due to the decline in the population of the native cotton-
tail rabbit (genus Sylvilagus), many hunters, sportsmen and field
trial enthusiasts have become interested in the San Juan rabbit as a
possible restocking source; and
Whereas, The State of Washington does not prohibit the export of
this domesticated pest, thus making legislation necessary to prevent
its introduction into the State of Maryland; and
Whereas, The San Juan rabbit is a domestic animal legally the
property of the landowner on whose holdings the rabbit lives, it is
