AN ACT to give the assent of the State of Maryland,
to the building of a bridge over the Potomac river, by
the Loudon and Berlin Bridge company, and to au-
thorise the said company to purchase or have con-
demned land for the same.

Preamble.
|
WHEREAS, The Legislature of Virginia has incorpo-
rated a company tinder the name of die Loudon and
Berlin Bridge company, to build a bridge over the
Potomac river, and appropriated thirty thousand dol-
lars to assist in building the same, and the said bridge
when so made, will give additional facilities to the
bringing of a considerable amount of trade into this
State; and whereas, the assent of this State is ne-
cessary, to enable the said company to build the said
bridge; Therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the assent of the State of Maryland
is hereby given to the president and directors of the said
Loudon and Berlin Bridge company, or by whatever
name the proper officers may be designated and known,
to build a bridge over the said river Potomac, at some
suitable site near the town of Berlin, in Frederick
county, Maryland, and they are hereby authorised and
empowered, to purchase and hold any land in this
State, that may be necessary to erect thereon abutments
and other fixtures, for the building of said bridge, and
to make a good and convenient road to and from the
same, to the public road now leading to the said Poto-
mac river, near the said town of Berlin, should it be
deemed advisable to select a site for the said bridge,
other than the one to which the said road now leads ;

Condemnation
of land.
|
and if the said president and directors of said company,
or other officers of said company or their lawful agent,
shall not be able to agree with the owners thereof, for
the purchase of any land which may be required for the
purposes aforesaid, or in case the owners thereof shall
be a feme covert or under age, non compos mentis, or
non-resident of the State, application may be made to
any justice of the peace of Frederick county aforesaid,
who shall thereupon issue his warrant under his hand
and seal, directed to the sheriff of said county, requiring
him to summon a jury of twenty inhabitants of said
