dred and forty-nine, eighteen hundred and fifty, and
eighteen hundred and fifty one, and to ascertain the
amounts due them severally for each of said years, us
teachers of said schools, according to the provisions of
the act to which this is a supplement, and the several
supplements thereto.

CHAP. 148.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That when said accounts
shall be adjusted, the said court shall deliver to each of

said teachers, under the seal of said Orphans' court, a
certificate shewing the amount due for each of said
years, and the commissioners for said county, shall, at
their next meeting thereafter, for laying the county
levy, levy such sum or sums as may be necessary to
pay the same, for the use of the party holding said cer-
tificates, in full, for services, for the years for which said
account and certificate may be furnished.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect from and after the passage thereof.

CHAPTER 148.

In force.

AN ACT authorising the Incorporation of Home-
stead or Building Associations in this State.

Passed April
30, 1852.

WHEREAS, Divers persons, chiefly from amongst the
industrial classes, in various parts of this State, particu-
larly in the city of Baltimore, have associated them-
selves together for the meritorious purpose of accumu-
lating, by small periodical deposits, a Savings' Fund,
by which they may be enabled to procure for them-
selves respectively, a Homestead, and for their mutual
benefit; thus presenting to persons so associated, a
strong motive or inducement to economy and frugality,
the exercise of which, cannot but promote their indi-
vidual welfare, and contribute largely to the increase of
the taxable property of the State; And whereas, it is
the dictate of a sound policy, that the protection and
encouragement of the Legislature, should be given to
associations having in view ends and objects so com-
mendable in their character; Therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly

of Maryland, That from and after the passage of this
act, it shall and may be lawful, and authority is hereby
granted, to any individuals or persons, other than free
negroes or mulattoes, in any city or county of this
