pay expenses,
and a fins.

house or lot doth not pave, amend or repair the foot-
way aforesaid, agreeably to the directions aforesaid,
that then the said commissioners are hereby authoris-
ed and directed to contract with any person or per-
sons for paving, amending and repairing the same,
for such sum or sums of money as shall be sufficient
to pave, amend and repair the same, and to charge
the same to such owner or owners, possessor or pos-
sessors, who shall forfeit the said sum, together with
one-eighth of a dollar per foot in length, as a fine for
such neglect or refusal, and that the owner or owners,
possessor or possessors of such house or lot, shall, in
the first instance, be obliged to pay such sum or sums
of money directed as aforesaid, together with the fine
aforesaid, to be collected as provided for in the ele-
venth section of this act; and the said commissioners
are hereby directed to pave, amend and repair such
foot-ways, and that the fines arising to be retain-
ed by their clerk, to be appropriated as hereafter di-
rected

13. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commis-
sioners be, and they are hereby authorised and em-
powered to erect, set up or place a rope, chain or bar, in
or across any of the streets, lanes or alleys of the said
precincts which they may be about to pave, amend or
repair, for such time as they may think necessary; and
that if any person or persons shall throw down, re-
move or attempt to prevent the putting up such rope,
chain or bar, every such person shall forfeit and pay
for every such offence, the sum of five dollars, to be
recovered and to be applied as herein after directed.

Relative to the
removal of nui-
sances.

14. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said com-
missioners shall have full power and authority to enter
Into the lots, grounds or possessions of any person or
persons, bodies corporate or politic, within the said
limits, for the purpose of removing nuisances, when-
ever application shall have been made to them in the
manner prescribed by this act for that purpose.

Foot-ways-
their width.
They shall be
secured by curb-
stones.

15. AND BE IT ENACTED, That all streets,
lanes and alleys within the said limits, of the width of
twenty feet and upwards, which shall be hereafter pav-
ed, shall be paved in such manner as to leave foot-ways
on each side of the street, and each foot-way shall be
one-fifth of the whole width of such street, lane or
alley; the foot-ways shall be secured by good and sub-
stantial curb-stones, and that all streets, lanes or
alleys of less width than twenty feet, shall be paved
with or without foot-ways, and in such manner as the
commissioners may think fit.
