sons holding biennial civil appointments under the exe-
cutive, the sum of two dollars each.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That in case any of those
officers named in the first section of this act, who are
appointed by the Governor, shall neglect to apply for
their commissions and pay the tax by this act imposed
thereon, for three months after the time when the said
commissions are transmitted to the several county clerks,
such neglect shall be considered a refusal to accept said
commissions, and it shall be the duty of said clerks re-
spectively, to send a list of the officers neglecting to
apply as aforesaid, to the Governor of this State, who
shall then proceed to appoint other persons in their stead ;
provided, that nothing in this section contained shall
apply to such persons as are appointed justices of the
peace.

An act for the relief of Richard T. Waters of Worcester
County.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That it may and shall be lawful for Richard T. Waters
of Worcester county, to hold, retain, and keep in this
State, as slave for life, a certain negro man named Levin,
between eighteen and forty-five years old, who is now
within this State; provided, that the said Richard T.
Waters shall, within thirty days after the passage of this
act, file with the clerk of Worcester county court, a list
of said slave, with an affidavit thereto attached, that the
same is a true and faithful list of said slave, stating his
age, and that he has not been brought into this State
for sale, and that he is a slave for life; and provided fur-
ther, that the said Richard T. Waters shall pay to said
clerk of said court the sum of fifteen dollars, to be paid
over by said clerk to the Treasurer of the Western
Shore, for the use and benefit of the colonization society
of this State.
