Not to affect
rights of mi-
nors.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That nothing in this act
contained shall be so construed as to effect the rights or
minors who may have an interest in the property known
as the Antietam Iron Works.

CHAPTER 248.

March 9, 1848.

An act entitled, an act for the protection of the Tobacco
Growers of Maryland.

Inspectors to
brand.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and alter the passage of this act
it shall be and it is hereby made the duty of the inspec-
tors of tobacco in this State to brand with a hot iron
every hogshead of tobacco inspected by them, with the
name of the State wherein the tobacco is raised.

Penalty for
defacing or
false branding.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That if any person shall
rub out or deface any brand on any hogshead of tobacco
as aforesaid with a view of changing the same, or shall
falsely mark or brand any hogshead of tobacco in this
State contrary to the provisions of the first section of
this act, he, she or they so offending upon conviction
thereof shall suffer a confinement in the Penitentiary for
a term not less than six months nor more than two
years, in the discretion of the judge or judges before
whom he, she or they may or shall be convicted.

Inconsistent
acts repealed.

SEC. 3 And be it enacted, That all acts or parts of
acts inconsistent with the provisions of this act, be and

the same are hereby repealed.

CHAPTER 249.

Governor to
appoint.

An act entitled, an act to provide for the appointment of
an Agricultural Chemist for the State.

SECTION. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the Governor, by and with the advice
and consent of the Senate, shall hereafter annually ap-
point and commission a person of ability, integrity and
suitable practical and scientific attainments as Agricul-
