CHAP. 232.

rity to levy a tax not exceeding one cent on the hun-
dred dollars upon the assessable property of said county,
said tax when collected to be applied to the support of
the public schools authorised to be established by the
first section of this act, and for no other purpose.

All school
funds to be ap-
plied to said
schools.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the present school
fund belonging to said county, and all other funds which
existing laws grant for educational purposes in said
county, shall be applied to the use of the public schools of
said county by the county commissioners of said county.

Treasurer to
pay over.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the treasurer of the
school fund of Washington county be and he is hereby
authorised to receive all devises, bequests and donations
which may be made for the benefit of said public schools,
and to pay the same over to the person or persons autho-
rised to receive the same, in the manner hereinafter to tie
provided.

Board to be
appointed and
called school
commissioners.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That the commissioners
of Washington county shall appoint one person from each
election district in said county, in the month of May in each
and every year, to be called the board of school commis-
sioners for said county, who shall continue in office for
one year, and from the end of that time until their suc-
cessors shall have been appointed, and if any vacancy
occur in the board of school commissioners before the
expiration of the time for which they were appointed,
either by death, resignation or otherwise, it shall be
the duty of the board to fill up the same as soon as con-
veniently may be.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That the said board of
school commissioners shall be convened by the county
commissioners within twenty days next succeed-
ing their appointment, and at their first meeting, or at
some subsequent meeting held by special adjournment,
shall proceed to the election of a president, treasurer and
secretary from their own board, to be chosen by a majo-
rity of votes of the whole board, and said president, trea-
surer and secretary shall hold their offices during the
period prescribed by the fifth section of this act, and if
any vacancy shall occur either in the office of president,
treasurer or secretary, from death, resignation or other-
wise, it shall be the duty of the board to fill up the same
at the earliest day practicable by a new election, and in
all cases a majority of the school commissioners shall

constitute a quorum for the transaction of business.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That the said board of
school commissioners shall have power to establish
as many schools in the county as the fund may be
