CHAPTER 114.

An act to allow Henry Devries, former collector of State
Taxes in Carroll County, further time to complete his

collections.

Time extend-
ed to collect.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Henry Devries, former collector of
State taxes in Carroll county, be and he is hereby autho-
rised to collect any and all taxes or balances of taxes
due him and now remaining due and unpaid, for the se-
veral years in which he was collector as aforesaid in
said county, in the same manner and with the same pri-
vileges and powers he could or might have done with-
in the time limited by law.

annexed to ac-
count.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said Henry
Devries, before he proceeds to collect under and by
virtue of this act, shall make out and deliver to the per-
son or persons from whom any taxes or balances of
taxes may be demanded, an account of the taxes or ba-
lances of taxes due from such person or persons, and if
the amount claimed be disputed by the parly, shall annex
an affidavit that the same is due and unpaid.

In force.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect from its passage, end continue in force until the
first day of January eighteen hundred and fifty.

An act to authorise Edmund Davis, of Allegany County,
to hold and retain in this State negro slave Henry
Demmit.

To retain slave
in this State.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That it shall be lawful for Edmund Davis, of Allegany
county, to hold and retain in this State, as a slave for life,
a negro slave named Henry Demmit, who is now within

this State; provided, that the said Edmund Davis shall,
within thirty days after the passage of this act, make
affidavit before some justice of the peace of Allegany
county, and have the same filed in the office of the clerk
of Allegany county court, of his intention to become and
remain a citizen of this State; and provided also, that the
said Edmund Davis shall, within the time aforesaid, file
with the said clerk a description of said slave, with as
