in the same manner, in every respect, as if the said case,
according to the rules and practice of the said court, had
regularly stood upon the said trial docket of June term,
eighteen hundred and forty-six, of said court.

CHAPTER 283.

CHAP. 284.

An act to repeal an act entitled, a further supplement to
the act authorising the appointing of Inspectors and
Wood Corders, and to regulate the cording of Wood
brought to the City of Baltimore.

7, 1846.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the act passed at December session, eighteen hun-
dred and forty-three, chapter two hundred and eighty-
one, entitled a further supplement to the act authorising
the appointing of inspectors and wood corders, and to
regulate the cording of wood brought to the city of Bal-
timore, be and the same is hereby repealed.

CHAPTER 284.

Repealed.

An act in relation to Free People of Color, in the City of
Baltimore.

9, 1846.

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assembly,
by a number of highly respectable citizens of Baltimore,
that an act passed at December session, eighteen hun-
dred and forty-two, chapter two hundred and eighty-one,
operates with much hardship upon many honest, indus-
trious and peaceable colored persons, residing in said
city, and prevents them from extending aid to the desti-
tute of their own color — therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act,
it shall be lawful for the Mayor of the city of Baltimore,
annually to grant permission in writing to free colored
persons, residing in the city of Baltimore, of good moral
character, and who pay each an amount of tax of at least
five dollars, to form themselves into charitable societies,
and to meet from time to time, to promote the object of

their association; provided, that their meeting and pro-

ceedings shall, at all times, be subject to the visitation
and inspection of such person as the Mayor may at any
time appoint and authorise for that purpose.

Proviso.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That whenever the Mayor
of the city of Baltimore, shall authorise a meeting of the
colored population, in conformity with the provisions of
this act, he is hereby required to appoint a police officer,
