CHAP. 34.

and bargains whatsoever necessary for the purposes and
objects of the said Company, and may have and use a
common seal which they shall have power to alter or
renew at pleasure, and generally to do every other act
or thing necessary to carry into effect the provisions, ob-
jects and purposes of this act, and not inconsistent with
the laws of this State or the United States.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the purposes and ob-
jects for which the Great Falls Iron Company aforesaid

is incorporated are the improvement, rebuilding and put-
ting in operation the works heretofore known as Ridge-
ly's Forges; the locating and laying off into streets a
town to be called Great Falls at said works, near the
point on the Great Fails of Gunpowder River, where the
Baltimore and Havre-de-Grace Turnpike Road crosses
the same, the beautifying and improving said town by
erecting therein stores, dwellings, workshops, factories,
buildings, mills, furnaces, school-houses, and such other
improvements as may be found or deemed necessary to
give effect to the objects and purposes of this act, and to
sell, rent, lease, convey, grant on condition or otherwise
dispose of or use for manufacturing, mining or agricul-
tural purposes any part or parcel of the lands or water
powers that shall or may become the property of said
company, together with the buildings and improvements
thereon erected; the procuring by mining therefor or
otherwise iron or other metalic ores, and to prepare,
smelt, manufacture and dispose of the same; the locating,
making, constructing and repairing a rail road from the
Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Rail Road to
said Works, the putting cars, machinery and motive
power on the same for the purpose of conveying freight
and passengers and charging tolls thereon, as hereinafter
mentioned and intended.

scription to the
capital stock.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said Robert How-
ard, William G. Harrison, William Winn, William
Knox and John S. Hayes, or such one or more of them
as the others or a majority of them shall, for that pur-
pose authorize and appoint may take and receive sub-
scriptions to the capital stock of said Company in such
manner, in such kind and or such terms as they or a
majority of them shall choose or designate, in shares of
one hundred dollars each, to such amount as they may
deem necessary, not exceeding two thousand shares;
and any person or persons who shall become holders or
entitled to one or more shares of said stock, shall there-
upon become a member of the Great Falls Iron Compa-
